The little ghostly man that wears black at the
Retfod Little Theatre
The present building that houses The Retford Little Theatre is only ten years old which still is a scene of some disturbing goings on. It is on the site of an older building that dates back to the First World War and was used for many purposes, one being a theatre. The old building was believed to be very haunted and even today not is all as t should be.
Some of the actors and crew flatly refuse to go in the theatre alone. Theatre assistants have seen objects move of their own accord on to the stage, papers being scattered around when there is clearly no wind around, and ghostly whistling and footsteps being heard about the empty auditorium. One of the members of the theatre company, preparing for the night’s show, putting out flyers and programmes on to the seats, became aware that he was not alone. Looking across the empty theatre they saw a man in an evening dress following them across the row of empty seats. Just when they thought they might cross and meet he suddenly vanished. On another occasion two workmen from a utility company experienced a sudden alarming drop in temperature whilst carrying out their repair work. The older of the two men knowing some historical background to the place suggested it could due to the fact that they were working on the very spot where the mortuary slab once stood when this part of the building was used as the town morgue. The construction of the building, in making it into popular little community theatre did not remove the ghost. Many using the building have experienced odd happenings and the man in the evening dress has been seen again at least once. No one really knows who he is and why he haunts the theatre. For some of the sold out shows they just know someone a strange man in an evening dress hasn’t paid his admission. |
